Abstract:

Chiefly street portraiture of people, mainly men, attending gay community events such as Gay Pride Day parades (1984-2001), the Castro Street Fair, Castro Halloween (1988-1990), the Folsom Street Fair (1984-2001), and the Dore Alley Street Fair. Also present are views related to the response to AIDS, groups in various night club and bar interiors, and political or cultural events and gatherings. Box 2: Folsom Street Fair (cont.), Castro Street Fair, Castro Halloween, Arcadia Bodybuilding Society, Mr. Drummer contest, annual physique contests (men and women), Rawhide bars (with gay and lesbian country western dancing and the Mr. Rawhide Contest), San Francisco AIDS Foundation Christmas gifting, AIDS Candlelight Memorial and Names Project Quilt, San Francisco AIDS Walk, Lion Pub and HQ Bar, miscellaneous bars and clubs (chiefly go-go dancers), San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, Mark Miller's farewell party, miscellaneous San Francisco gay events and street scenes, miscellaneous Castro street scenes and local businesses. The miscellaneous folders contain several exterior views of gay adult theaters, an Act Up demonstration, various social scenes, events of gay and lesbian political organizations, and portraits of San Francisco Supervisors Carole Migden and Harry Britt, among others.

Clifford Baker, born in Ventura, Calif. in 1937, began his career as a professional photographer in 1977. In 1981 he relocated from San Diego to San Francisco. In 1989 he began taking photographs for the San Francisco Sentinel, and in 1993 started writing a Speak Out column of street interviews for that weekly gay newspaper. Many of his images have been published as note cards, greeting cards, and calendars as well as in magazines such as Dance, The Advocate, and many others. In 1995 a book of his male erotic photography was published by Bruno Gmunder Verlag (Berlin): Clifford Baker (Euros No. 1).
